Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadowing

We arrived home today after a camping trip for several days in Indian Lake, Ohio.  While the weather didn’t always cooperate (rainy several times), we enjoyed seeing the boats on the water, kayaking, and biking in the State Park. When I returned home to see the weekly photo challenge – foreshadowing-I knew just the picture.  There were several rather large-sized squirrels in the campground and one in particular, that I named Rusty, was very friendly.  I think if I had really tried I could have had him eating from my hand.  Despite the abundance of nuts falling from the trees he didn’t seem too interested.  I snapped several pictures like this one of Rusty just chilling on the branch.  At one point he was actually sleeping.  I don’t recall ever seeing a squirrel sleep before.  They are always busily scurrying around and jumping from branch to branch.  So what is ‘ol Rusty foretelling?  A mild winter of course….why else would he be catching some Z’s instead of gathering food for the winter?  At least that is what I am banking on! 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: Masterpiece

I must admit this week’s photo challenge was an exciting one for me.  As a life-long lover of the arts and art teacher by profession I can think of several examples of art that have had a profound impact on my life:  seeing Guernica in my elementary art class and learning about its meaning, visiting la Pieta and the Sistine Chapel in Italy, rounding the corner at the Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg Florida and seeing the Discovery of America by Chrostopher Columbus for the first time.

Yet, this is a camping blog, so I would be remiss if I did not mention the profound joy I get from camping and that is exploring the most marvelous masterpiece of all – God’s creation in the world around us.

The beauty of God’s masterpiece is that you can visit the same place over and over again and never see it exactly the same way.  Whether it be the change of seasons or the slow progression of elements over time, there is always something new to appreciate.  There is also an abundance of natural diversity if we are fortunate to be able to explore it.  Friends of ours just returned from a vacation in Sedona and commented how strikingly beautiful it was.  Just think about how many different terrains can be explored in our country alone.  And that is just the beginning!  What places have you visited where you have been awestruck by the beauty God has provided for our enjoyment?

Marble Springs Campground- Allen, MI

A great review we wanted to share!

Blue Spring

Boasting Michigan’s only natural blue spring, Marble Springs Campground is located just west of Allen along US12.  The spring subsequently feeds several creeks and ponds located throughout the property.  With mature trees, grassy fields, and plenty of scenic water located throughout, Marble Springs is a beautiful setting for the weekend getaway, or to set up shop for a while.

That’s not to say it doesn’t have its faults, but you get the up north feel, while being fairly close to the Ohio boarder.  The campground has 2 restroom/shower facilities, 4 pavilions, a pool, a swimming pond, a fishing pond, and the usual convenience store.  With only about 80 total sites, of which 34 are seasonal, the facility is small in numbers, but  not in size.  The sites are quite spacious, and offer water and electrical hookups.  A few full service sites would be nice, but it’s not too bad for…

Packing light but eating well.

When camping in a pop-up, space is certainly at a premium. We have found a few products we love that fit and travel well in our tiny fridge and still allow us to have a hearty breakfast before a day of adventure.

All three of these products can be made easily and require little preparation.

We like to bring “egg-beaters” type eggs with us in the cooler because they are liquified and therefore you don’t end up with a carton of broken eggs and shells when you arrive at your destination.  We have never ventured into the world of freeze-dried eggs because we always have a cooler with us to keep things cold.  Certainly if you did not have a cooler, then freeze-dried would be the best bet.

We also love the Fast Shake pancake mix.  No need for a measuring spoon or bowl – just add water to the top of the label, shake and pour.  I have searched the world over to find Batter Blaster – this is a product that is pancake mix in a can similar to Reddi-Whip.  You just aim at the pan and shoot!  I recently found out the company went out of business.  Too bad!  I have never had an easier time making pancakes.

On one of our recent camping trips, the camp office gave us sample of a new product from Hungry Jack – hashbrown potatoes in a carton.  According to the directions you add hot water, wait 10 minutes or so, then cook in a pan.  I have not yet made them because I haven’t wanted to heat up water then wait for them to do their thing – but it seems easy enough and certainly comes in an easy to store container.

We would love to hear about tips and tricks you have for camp cooking!  Please share. 🙂
