Stone Mountain Park Campground is located just 15 minutes east of Atlanta, Georgia. Don’t let the proximity fool you. There is plenty of nature at this park. It encompasses 3,200 acres of land. The park is more than a campground. Stone Mountain is one of the most family friendly parks we have visited, as there is something for everyone. For those who love to indulge in nature, there are 15 miles of nature trails with lots of nature, especially birds. The 363 acre lake offers visitors fishing, kayaking, and canoeing opportunities. For the history buff, Stone Mountain includes a mountain side with carved-in generals from the Civil War, the Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard, and a museum that includes the history of Stone Mountain as well as Native-American culture. For the golf enthusiasts, there is an 18- hole course. Kids can enjoy many of the attractions; the scenic railroad, laser show, 4D theaters, etc. etc. Check out the website for all the possibilities.

We stayed at Stone Mountain March 28-31^st, 2015. Our campsite was #61 and it was on a hilltop overlooking the primitive campsites down the hill below us. Because it was early spring and the leaves had not fully bloomed, we could see the lake, Although, our campsite was not considered a lakefront site, so we saved $10/night because of this. Site #61 was a u-shaped pull through. Our site included water and electric for $31/night. Stone Mountain honored our Good Sam Card discount. Be aware that there is a $15 parking charge to get into the main entrance of the park. Once you get into the campground, the cashier will provide you with a pass so you will not have to pay $15 every day, just once. The camp store has a decent mount of camping supplies and food/snacks. Firewood was pricy; $6 a bundle or 2/$10. The quality of the wood was less than desirable. It was not seasoned. The store sold 10lb bags of ice at $3. In order to fish the lake, you had to have a fishing license. However, you could not buy them in the campground or anywhere in the park. This was discouraging.

Appearance:

Stone Mountain Campground includes a main road that runs parallel to the street. There are several sections of the campground indicated by a letter.  All the roads throughout were paved. The sites consisted of gravel, dirt and grass. Overall, the campground was well manicured. The entrance included flowerbeds and flowering trees. The sites themselves were ok. Some were more spacious than others. In section “M”, it seemed as though the campers were crammed in there. While we enjoyed our u-shaped site (site #61), there was some u-shaped sites like #53 that were barely off the road and offered little space. I would feel nervous being in a pop-up that close to the road. Many sites include a beautiful view of the lake and Stone Mountain. Lakefront sites are more expensive but have much better views. Each site offered a picnic table, charcoal grill, and a circle of rocks for your campfire. Sites ranged from primitive tent camping to full hookup. Some full hookup even included cable. These premium sites were more costly. Rating: ( 1- 5 lanterns with 5 being the highest)

Family and Pet Friendly:

As explained in the introduction, there are many activities within Stone Mountain Park, however, there are also many things to do without even leaving the campground. The campground is spread out into many sections and the roads are paved, great for those who like to bike, walk, or run. The campground has a pool, volleyball court, and horseshoes, all of which were well maintained. There were row-boat rentals available from the camp store.There is only one playground near the entrance and although it was well maintained, if you were camping in one of the back sections it would be quite a hike to the playground. Though there was plenty of space to walk the dogs, we were disappointed in the lack of a fenced-in dog area. There is space within the campground, so hopefully this will be a future addition. Some of the hiking trails had pick-up bags, waste containers, and water fountains for dogs. Because of all of the activities within the campground and the attractions within Stone Mountain Park, we highly recommend this campground to families.

Area Attractions:

One of the highlights of our camping experience at Stone Mountain was the hiking. With 15 miles of hiking, there is plenty of nature to take in at this park. There are many differing levels of walking/hiking areas from a paved pedestrian path to a somewhat challenging 1 mile climb up the slope of the mountain.  Some trails are nicely wooded and include nature displays of local plants that attract many species of birds.  One 5 mile trail follows the perimeter of the mountain and offers a variety of scenic terrain.  For a more detailed overview of the trail system at Stone Mountain visit our hiking page review here.

A short distance from the campground (shuttle busses are available free of charge) is a laser light show on the side of the mountain – set to music.  The show is seasonal so check the website for schedule of events.  A train ride around the park and winter sled-tubing are some of the other activities available throughout the year. Themed weekends are held within the park as well.

Bathrooms:

The campground offered modern shower houses in most sections of the campground. Each included restroom facilities and five shower stalls. There were a number of mirrors and sinks. The individual shower stalls were tiled and included a 4×5 dressing area with three hooks and plenty of space to get dressed. We were very pleased with this. The water flow and temperature was good but not great.  The showers were not push button. The shower houses were well maintained and relatively clean. Two of the shower houses offered laundry facilities and we took advantage of that perk. $2.00 for washer, $2.00 for dryer.
